The Shag Dance – Carolina’s Style

In the sparkling sun of the east coast, North Myrtle Beach city is ready for one of the most important events of the season the SOS Mid-Winter Shag Classic. The various events will be scattered around the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Drive, like Fat Harold, Ducks, OD Pavilion – places closely related to the history of the shag dance, will bring the best beach music, dance in the street, and fun for all. The ocean waves, the breeze and a cold beer is what you need to experience the southern style in the rhythm of shag.

Carolina shag is the swing dance of the South and it has roots on the shores of North Myrtle Beach. Shag is the Official State Dance of South Carolina and the SOS (The Society of Stranders) brings together thousands of shaggers  eagerly to have a good time, to reconnect with people who share the same passion for the shag dance, and to make unforgettable memories.

Shag is a fluid, balanced, rhythmic dance that requires proper foot positions and you never move the same foot twice in a row. The lower body does most of the moving while the upper body remains erect without swaying from side to side. The body moves forward and backward like a swinging pendulum.

The shag shoes are a must for both men and women. The feet play an important role in the shag dance and proper shoes are required. The classic style is leather bottomed shoes flats or shoes with nearly no heel. The Judy’s House of Oldies  in North Myrtle Beach is one of the places offering a variety of shag shoes of different styles and sizes.
