I was so excited today to stop by the Fresh Produce clothing store at Broadway at the Beach and meet Mrs. Debbie Stephens, the store manager. I was so ready to find out more details about the line design she carries in her store!  I was not disappointed, it was love at first sight! The colors of the clothing line, the accessories and the jewelries were a true delight for my eyes. I was truly impressed by Mrs. Debbie’s enthusiasm and passion for her business and the outfits featured in her store.

The clothing line reflects an inspiration from the  California’s coastal lifestyle, with  prints of a colorful palette, flattering and comfortable for every body shape and size.  And I mean every size, since outfits are also available in extra fresh plus size.  What can you find in the store, you ask? Well… Let’s see: colorful shirts for women and men, skirts and tops offering many ways to mix and match, versatile dresses for beach or dine out, shorts and pants, easy-to-wear pieces to fit any person’s style and taste.

You can also find fashionable accessories from the coastal line design hats and bags, to Echo design scarves that come in spicy colors and perfectly suit with Fresh produce clothing line. The store also carries one of a kind jewelry such as Spartina Products from the Daufuskie Island in Charleston, David Obrey’s delicate and monochromatic pieces, Dana Herbert’s adorable jewelry from the west coast of Portland, Oregon and handmade accessories from Guatemala.

Join me for an inside tour and enjoy the pictures from the store. Then scroll down a little more to make sure you don’t miss the interview with Mrs. Debbie Stephens, the store manager…

Q: What is the story behind the brand’s name? Why Fresh Produce?

A: The brand was brought to life in 1984, when husband-and-wife team Thom and Mary Ellen Vernon began selling silk-screened t-shirts in bright graphics and custom jewelry at the ’84 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in the parking lot across the street from the coliseum. After a successful experience, the couple decided to launch their own brand. While they were discussing the retail plans over dinner, they spotted a fresh produce delivery truck cruise past and the brand name was born.

Q: Competition is fierce in the industry, what sets your store apart from the other clothing stores at Broadway at the Beach?

A: One of the things we hear most about the Fresh Produce retail experience is that it is like shopping with your best friend. Our stores reflect our coastal inspiration and are filled with sensational colors that lift your mood and allow you to shine. It is Mary Ellen’s spirit, passion for life and love of color that is infused into our line and retail experience.

Q: How does the label ‘Made in USA’ impact the purchase decisions of your customers?

A: The brand was started in California and today more than 80 percent of the line is still made there. Being made in America is part of Fresh Produce’s DNA and we believe our customers appreciate that authenticity and the opportunity to buy American-made clothing.

Q: If there is one word to describe the Fresh Produce Clothes brand it would be ‘color’. How do you manage to adapt your line of clothing and its multitude of colors to the limited palette and design features of each season’s fashion trend?

A: One of the hallmarks of our line is the unique garment-dye process that is created using reactive and pigment dyes, which gives each style a pre-shrunk, soft textured, vibrant look. This process allows us to create our exclusive prints in a wide variety of color combinations. In addition, we introduce new, rich colors in complementary hues that arrive throughout the season to create palettes that women can build upon with timeless wardrobe basics and standout styles.

Q: Please share with our readers the reasoning behind the ‘Live Life, Enjoy Color: A Coastal Affair’ event” you are about to launch Thursday, June 27, 2013*

A: The event was first inspired by Coastal Living’s announcement of the happiest seaside towns in which it noted Sanibel and La Jolla – two Fresh Produce locations. Since the coast has always been a source of inspiration for the brand, we wanted to celebrate our coastal towns as well as the carefree beachside attitude that flows throughout our stores and our line.
