Charleston Fashion Week 2013

Charleston, a city of romance with its romantic allure and its sophisticated southern charm is ready to shine and bloom in March. Charleston Fashion Week has become one of the most important fashion week premieres for emerging designers and talent models across the East Coast. The Charleston Fashion Week 2013 will be held under the tents in Marion Square in downtown Charleston, SC in March 19th-23rd. The five fashion nights will feature more than 35 runway shows and will launch the careers of numerous talented upcoming fashion designers and models. Emerging top 20 designers will showcase their Fall 2013 collections on the nights of Tuesday through Friday and the emerging bridal designers will showcase the Spring Bridal collection on Saturday. Let’s meet the top 20 designers, a new generation of ambitious, innovative, and aspiring fashion designers.

South Carolina is proudly represented by two designers: Lulu Long from Seabrook Island and Siobhan Elisabeth Murphy from Charleston. Lulu Long will showcase Childrenswear Fall Collection 2013 influenced  by designers from Ralph Lauren to Vera Wang. Siobhan Elisabeth Murphy will offer a contemporary collection inspired by the textures of her childhood wardrobe. She is very known for her passion for tutu.  ReTulled collection is a couture and ready- to-wear tutu along with accessory line headed.

North Carolina has four young emerging designers ready to rock the runaway show. Clarissa Arocena and Bryan Datinguido are from Durham and together will showcase Womenswear Fall 2013 inspired by traditional tailoring and classic craftsmanship. Their work has been influenced by designers like Helmut Lang and Ricardo Tisci for Givency.

Jazsalyn McNeil, a 20 years old designer who lives in Raleigh, NC has started her career in fashion as a model but she has decided to make her mark and to become a fashion designer. She already became one of the winner designers in the Belks competition and some of  her designs will be sold at the large retailer this spring.

Victoria Cid from Charlotte, NC will take the step on the runaway fashion show with Womenswear Fall 2013 collection. Her  role model designers are Viktor & Rolf, Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Givenchy, and Balmain.

Menswear designer Afriyie Poku , born in Ghana and currently based in Atlanta, GA is a talented designer who won in 2012 Peroni Style Atlanta competition with his menswear line entitled ‘Oberama Afriyie’. His work has been influenced by Ghanian born British designer Ozward Boateng.

Womenswear designer Callie Nichol from Social Circle, GA has been  inspired by art history and her work is  influenced by designers Christian Dior, the original and the new look, Gareth Pugh, Helmut Lang, and Marc Jacobs.

Hope Wallace from Savannah, GA loves to design graphic pieces with geometric shapes, specially in  black and white. She is inspired mainly by pop art and her favorite designers are Tom Ford, Dsquared, Moschino, and Marc Jacobs.

Katherine Barron, Savannah, GA is a designer on the rise and her work inspiration are pure feelings or impulses. Ralph Rucci has the most influence on her current work.

Kita Nolley lives in  Atlanta, GA and she will showcase the Expatriate Womenswear Fall 2013  inspired by her love for fine meanswear.

Megan Huntz is originally from Atlanta, GA and she lived for seven years in Italy where she worked for one of the most important Italy’s denim company Meltin’Pot and among other Italian clothing manufactures she worked for Max&Co and New Penny, brands of the Max Mara group. She is the creative mind of her brand Megan Huntz Dresess which she will showcase at the Charleston Fashion Week 2013.

Monisha Pillai is another emerging designer from Atlanta, GA and she describes her design more wearable and classy. Her inspiration comes from architectural pieces and the shapes are converted into garments.

Sabrina Spanta 20 years old designer from Savannah, GA is a current student pursuing a BFA in Fashion Design. Her drive for creating garments has started since she was in second grade. The drive and creativity are stimulated by Alexander McQueen while the designs are inspiration from the traditional fashion in Afghanistan.

Cassidy Elisabeth-Mae Brown from Melbourne, FL loves designing women’s wear and her design aesthetic is original and versatile.

Womenswear designer Hyemin Cho lives in NY and her collection is a mixture of influences from Korean traditional culture and 60’s fashion style.

Karen Hulse from Rego Park, NY will step on the runway with Go.See.Do. label. The love for nature, culture, history,colors, prints are the  inspiration for her designs creation.

Kendra Duplantier lives in Brooklyn, NY and she will feature womenswear fall 2013 collection inspired by the past and the present of pop culture.

Mary Katherine Schweitzer is originally from Colorado and she lives now in Manhattan, NY working for Ralph Lauren as an assistant for print research and development for Lauren Dresses. Her work is inspired by modern art, geometric shapes, and electronic music.

Roz Morris lives in NY, NY and she will showcase the Stone Morris label she founded in 2012. Ros Morris finds a fine balance between art and fashion integrating fundamental elements from oriental medicine and acupuncture. Her background in fine arts allows her to offer innovative details to simple silhouettes simply based on fabric and textile design.

Serena da Conceicao is a Brazilian Norwegian designer who lives in Brooklyn, NY and has been named “a very talented New York City designer” by Elle magazine. She worked for many designers in NY including Cynthia Rowley and Calvin Klein. Now her attention is turning to lingerie and her designs can be seen in the Serena da Conceicao ready-to-wear collection.

Brooke Ray is an emerging bridal designer from Marietta, GA who will feature the bridal Melanie Brooke label on the last day of the Charleston Fashion Week.

I am excited and I can barely wait for the Charleston Fashion Week to open it’s gates and let fashion fans enjoy five glamorous fashion nights and their magic runway shows.


Emanuela Neculai is a fashionista with European background, currently living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USA.
